What are IV infusions?

To receive an IV infusion, a needle is inserted into a vein in your arm or hand; the needle connects to a slender tube (cannula). Your medication is a liquid solution suspended in a bag that goes straight into your bloodstream through the cannula.

Over an hour or so, the liquid medicine drips along the cannula and into your vein. IV infusions are painless except for a slight scratch as the needle enters your vein.
